  1. MAIN SEQUENCE

  3. After being born, stars appear as a narrow band in the H-R diagram, including most of the stars in the universe. 
  4. This long and stable phase, after a star is born and when its fusion reactions have started, is known as the main 
  5. sequence. After the main sequence most stars become giants. The stars in the main sequence are in the luminosity class 
  6. V (see dwarf).

  8. Our Sun will be in its stable main sequence for approximately another five billion years, or as long as it has already 
  9. existed. After that it will become a red giant, swallowing up the Earth. The giant phase will last for only 700 million 
  10. years, after which the Sun will become a white dwarf, dimming out by time to an inactive black dwarf.
